If you looking for a how to mastering music guide then the best thing you can do is to look for something from Bob Katz. Bob is a master of mastering and his book The Music Mastering Handbook has been an endless source of help and inspiration for me.
In these books Bob not only gives you specific techniques on mastering but also talks to many of the top experts in the industry to try and gain some insight into what is takes to be a proper mastering engineer.
Personally I do not overcomplicate mastering, and if I’m going to release a song I will also use an expert because its money well spent.
