In this post I’m going to dive right into a new piece of software I picked up yesterday that has made my beat making life so much easier meaning that I really have been able to get my beats pumping in as little as four minutes…this is weird so if your just into normal drum machines don’t bother reading.

Why my need to for new Drum Machine software? I have to let you into a little secret…

I was crying like a baby yesterday afternoon, your probably thinking I had some bad news or that girl trouble was tickling my heart string but neither of those was the case.

Try and picture me sitting in front of my computer and sniffling like a little baby. The reasons for my tears (I did not cry for long) was that I was trying to hook up Pro Tools with a copy of reason my friend gave for making beats. (Reason has some really cool drum machine software built in.)

It took ages to get the thing working and I had to do like 400 google searches, but finally I was in and had Reason running.

But to be honest if you’ve ever used either Reason or Pro Tools you will know that both of these frigging program are a pain in the **** to get set up and use.

So having sat there for hours hooking up Reasons, and  working out how to use it then suddenly my whole beat making system crashed and I had not saved anything…

AAHHHHHHH!!!!

It was all getting far too complex and the time had come to find some drum machine software made to be musician friendly.

If you have already spent the pennies on the Zoom H4 I’m going to do a rather strange thing at this point and ask you to leave this page immediately and go and write a song or have some tea because although this new product is great I can tell you that as far as I can see there are not enough additional features to seal the deal for you. If on the other hand this is your first handy recording of you’re upgrading form the H2 sit back and let me unleash hell!!

For anyone who has been living under a “handy recorder” rock for the past couple of years let me explain what these machines are all about.

Basically what you have here is a Zoom’s attempt to make super high quality recordings more affordable. The Handy recorder range was designed to capture interviews on the move and also be a way for musicians to make demos that stand far above anything produced on the tape based four tracks in the days of my mullet wearing youth…

You get a pair of really nice quality stereo microphones and a whole range of extra features including remote control facility and the ability to record four channels of audio.

Who is the Zoom H4N for?

I think the perfect people to own this new unit are acoustic musicians who would like to capture gigs and make the tracks available online for free or paid download. Also bands in the the process of writing new material who need a good notebook to not only get down ideas but also be able to use some of those ideas in the fished project…another great use is making interviews with famous folk and posting it on Itunes in podcast format.

Let me just say now that if you’re in a band looking to make a radio quality recording I think the Zoom H4N is not really for you because although you could record all the tracks and add them to garage band later, this would be somewhat of a head ache. The best program for making a full blown album would be something like Pro Tools.

Case study podcast with the Zoom H4N

So I decided to do a little test with the new machine when it fell through my letterbox the other morning. My mission was to crack open the box and have a podcast posted to iTunes within the hour. My first step was to get into the box (which is always a problem for me) then to open the quick start guide for the recording instructions. The button are all very straight forward for the most basic features like recording so I put in the SD card, plugged in the power and started my podcast. Once I had all the bits in place it was time to throw the audio into itunes and get rolling with the editing. In case you don’t know garage band is fast becoming my recording software of choice and I soon had the whole thing mixed and in the feed in under and hour. Plus the quality is amazing with just a touch of compression and limiting I think the results where quite good:

Oh no …But I do have a couple of reservations

Ok so I’m picking hairs here but I want to give you the full scoop so you can make a fully informed decision…

The first of my little tiny concerns would be that the feel of the device can sometimes sees a little bit lightweight for what it costs and I would have much preferred a more substantial material than the plastic casing that comes as standard. I also noticed that the SD card slot is a bit flimsy and is liable to fall off at any moment leaving you open to dust and an annoying piece of tape covering the hole. With that said the look is not really what important here because in terms of value for money there is no other machine that gives you the features of the Zoom H4N in the same price range

Hopefully you now have a bit of a better idea of which handy recorder is best going to suite your needs. If you would like to go ahead and give the Zoom H4N a try you might find some good deals on Amazon. You can always be sneaky and get a refund if the product does not float your boat.

Below is a quick explanation of the essential elements you should be aware of if you’re planning to set up a home recording studio.

The Sound source

The sound source is easily obtainable. Your voice, guitar, drums, in fact anything that makes noise constitutes a sound source.

Input device

There are three main input devices that will convert the sound so that it can be recorded; instruments, microphones and sound modules.

Musical instruments

Any instrument that plugs into the mixer such as an electric guitar, bass or drum machine is an input device. Some, such as a drum machine will plug directly into your recorder, whilst others like the guitar need an intermediary device, known as a direct box, which connects the instrument to the mixer.

Microphones

Microphones record sounds that don’t plug into the recorder. They convert the sound waves into electrical impulses that the recorder understands.

Sound modules

These are special synthesizers that are controlled by a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) controller or another synthesizer’s keyboard. Most sound modules have MIDI ports so that they can be connected to other equipment.

The exception to this are soft-synths, computer software programs that store the sound modules on a computer hard drive.

Some sound sources are also input devices. Electric guitars for
instance have pickups that enable them to be plugged directly into
a mixer input.

Mixer

The aim of the mixer is two-fold. It sends the electrical signals to your recorder and it enables you to turn your tracks into a professional sounding piece of music.

Recorder

Most home recording enthusiasts these days use a digital recorder. The recorder is a storage medium for your audio data.

Signal processors

In an ideal world you could record a piece of music and it would be perfect first time. However we don’t live in a perfect world and so we need a way to tweak our tracks. Signal processors have the ability to adjust a track’s frequency and balance and add additional effects. One of the most popular software packages is Pro Tools.

Effects and Plugins

Equalizers are a type of electronic equipment that reduces frequency distortion. They are used to make your instruments sound clear and to ensure all of your tracks blend well together.

Dynamic processors balance and control the volume levels of your audio.

Effects processors allow you to insert unusual effects into your music and produce more realistic sounds.

Monitors

Monitors in this instance mean headphones or speakers so you can judge the quality of your recordings. You can choose from a passive monitor which requires an amplifier or an active monitor with built in amp.

Here is my list but obviously there are any number of factors that can go into making that perfect sound card decision.

1. The fist thing is how many inputs and outputs you’re going to need. If it’s just you and a guitar then this decision is easy. (Two will do.) But if you plan on recording the band then you may need anywhere up to 32.
2. Are you going to be using a Microphone for vocal and acoustic instruments? If so you will need a good Microphone pre-amp and maybe phantom power.
3. The last thing you need to decide is how much you’re going to spend on your sound card. If you have a couple of grand then you will have no problem, but if your budget is smaller it might be time to get on eBay!

In conclusion there is not really a best sound card for recording but a lot of different options that need to be considered. I hope this post made things a little clearer.

You will notice that there are no actual moving pictures in the video, but just my shaky voice recording on the Iphone telling you how I set up my home demo studio at the moment.

You’ll be surprised to hear that in the past couple of months I have atually moved to Garageband from my every trusy Pro Tools set up. (Obviously whenever we do big budget stuff Pro Tools will always be the way forward.) But for super quick demos Garageband is the best thing I have found.

You may be tempted to save money and work with the Sure sm58 you use for your live work, but trust me as soon as you get yourself a proper vocal recording mic which uses phantom power you will notice the difference right away. I would suggest a Studio Projects B1 mic for a good sound at low budget.

You will also need to borrow a pair of you mothers’ stockings to make a super simple pop shield.

1. Listeners perceive louder music to be better music, so you want to use compression and limiting to make your tracks really punch through the speakers.
2. All tracks on your album should be a good relative level to each other. You can make acoustic tracks really loud with mastering, but if they are way louder than your heaviest rock songs then all the power of those rocking tracks will be lost.

Make sure you check your mastering on all sort of speaker set ups. Most listeners don’t spend money on nice speakers so make sure your mix still works on a tinny laptop.

In these books Bob not only gives you specific techniques on mastering but also talks to many of the top experts in the industry to try and gain some insight into what is takes to be a proper mastering engineer.

Personally I do not overcomplicate mastering, and if I’m going to release a song I will also use an expert because its money well spent.

I like this option because it lets you save the time it takes to learn a computer and get right into your recording projects.

For years I have been a total Pro Tools covert and have been very wary to stray from what I knew, but when I recently got a brand spanking new Mac book pro I was so high on Apple fever that I decided it was time to give it a go.

Once you have an idea of what is possible choose a room in your home that will house all your recording gear, then start adding a few well chosen sound proofing elements. Chances are that you will not be able to totally block out the sound so the goal here is to take the edge off and create a better sounding room.

You can then invest as much as you can afford on the sound source and digital audio interface.

You really need to have this base level knowledge before you start your recording as many people buy some expensive equipment then wade straight in to the recording process.

I think that may not be a good idea because there is a chance that you will make so many terrible recordings and become frustrated with the whole thing.

Look at as many videos and books as you can early on and I’m sure your recordings will benefit.

But with a bit of imagination you can find the pockets of great sound and make your demos sound like they have been professionally produced.

The key is to work with what you have and to realise that different instruments need a different room, so if you want your drums to sound wide with a lot of space try recording in the garage.

Another thing that will give you good results is to record your vocal in a closet as this is like a ready made vocal booth!

If you’re still not happy it’s time to break open the EQ and tweak the snare out. It may be quite tricky to isolate the sound so you may have to apply the effect in a couple of places.

Once you happy give the snare a little boost of mids to make sure it retains the power.

This gives you a very natural sounding acoustic and is perfect as a pad track of even for a much simpler recording with just a vocal and guitar.

Another nice benefit of this method is that its gives you a really nice stereo image. If you pan your recording from the two mics left and right it will almost sound as though the guitarist is sitting in front of you.

Anything over about five years old is not going to be able to run a really nice piece of software for audio editing but you can still work with Midi files and an early version of Cubase. (I have a friend who still uses his 15 year old Mac and swears by it!)

If you have some cash to spend buy a Mac pro with at least 4 GB of ram and a copy of Pro Tools.

For very basic mastering I first add an EQ to the whole track and make the necessary changes in the frequencies.

The next step is to add some subtle compression to make sure that the track is all relatively level.

Finally I use limiter to give the track the right volume to compete with other demos I’m working on.

Now you want to focus on the drums and bass and make sure they’re working well together and complimenting each other.

After that many people would add a pad track which is a subtle background sound that adds feeling to the song. Use a warm synth or acoustic guitar for this.

You can now move onto your main instruments which will sit well in the mix as long as you have a good source recording and keep FX to a minimum.

In each case you want to have all the equipment you’re going to need to hand so that you don’t have to go searching for an egg shaker right in the middle of your most creative moment.

If possible designate a section of your house for recording projects so that you don’t have to rebuild your studio every time.

The benefits are obvious with very little leakage / feedback and for the drummer it’s a dream to be able to do the recording without fear of smashing one of the drum mics and forcing another take.

Let me explain…

The process would be to get the drummer to lay down his parts then use Pro Tools virtual tracks to audition all different mic placements. This software makes it really easy to scroll through all you options and pick the sound that best suites the track.

I might try different microphones, different amps, different pics and even different guitars in search of that perfect tone.

This may sound a little anal but the results speak for themselves.

A great choice would be some kind of dynamic microphone, with a large diaphragm. Try the AKG D112.

Now you have to test every placement you can think of and see which rocks the best.

The next thing you want to get is a pop shield which will stop you getting a popping sound when your singer says their P’s.

Get your singer to stand about 12 inches back from the mic and us a nice compressor to level out their delivery.

Another option is to use a few books and tilt your electric guitar amp so that it’s pointing directly into your face. This will also give you a much better idea of the sound.

Of course the sound depends very much on the quality of the audio interface you use, but I’ve found that even when using an Mbox I have been able to capture some usable bass sounds.

Roll off a bit of the top end with your EQ package and you’re left with a nice tight bass sound that responds to signal processing very well.

Unless you have a really nice bass amp I would recommend this.

The problem with miking up an amp is that it sounds very different from the perspective of the player standing above the sound than it does for the microphone right in front of it. So make sure you tilt your amp directly at you head to get the real sound.

Another thing that helps me get a really heavy sound is to actually stay away from too much distortion and find a nice crunch sound. This might sound backward but the more distortion you use the weaker the sound can be.

There are a number of clip-on options out there that will give you various results depending on the price. Remember that the more you pay for a mic the better the results…usually! So no $10 bargains if you’re serious about the sound.

The other option for a more natural sound is to set up your miking on the mouth piece, on the keys and at the end. This will give you a great overall sound and a lot of control over the dynamics of the Flute.

The first will be your standard amp and microphone set up using a nice base amp and mic positioned wherever you get the best sound in your situation.

The second input will be coming directly from the bass into the sound card as clean as possible to give you space to add some FX processing.

You will the mix these two recordings together which will give you a nice sharp bass sound that will act as the back bone of you song.

The first thing is that contrary to popular belief, the fewer mics the better. (Within Reason.) This is a good idea because the more microphones you use the harder the mix will be to get right.

The next concept is to make lots of test recordings and get you placement right before the final recoding. It’s much easier to move a mic slightly than to fix a problem in the mix.

Your first choice will probably be something like the Digi 002, which is great hardware for the higher end home studio where you may be recording a live band set up and need plenty of I/O options.

The second options is strictly for the singer songwriters who uses ready made drum beats and virtual instruments for most of the backing tracks. In this case you want to go for something smaller like the Mbox which will give you two inputs and a free version of Pro Tools.

But I can certainly see the appeal; who really wants to spend hours and hours messing about with all manner of cables round the back of the mixing desk, before you can ever get to hear that brand new piece of outboard gear? With the new PC based mixing systems, you just call up a plug-in to your track and that’s it.

Once in a while I still jump back on the old desk just because I like the feel and the sense of control over the whole process.

Mixing is such an integral part of the recording process and is very often overlooked by newbie producers who add so many plug-ins that the mix starts to sounds terrible.

The mixing process for me really starts with the recoding stage where you need to use the best possible sound source. These days I try and use as few FX as possible and mix in a much more natural style like the very old school producers. Back in the day I used to use Cubase on my old PC which was quite good for handling midi, but the mixing console never quite felt up to scratch.

With a basic version of Pro Tools you can build you mix on 24 virtual tracks and add FX and buses to each one.

Every new version that comes out adds more and more features making Pro Tools the daddy of music mixing.

When I first opened up this bit of kit I could not quite believe my eyes, because as free open source stuff goes this is very nearly as good as the paid programs like Pro tools or Logic.

You have many tracks to work with and all your mutes and fades at the click of a button, plus you can install additional plug-ins to enhance you tracks and the whole mixing process.

For mixing Audacity is very much like Pro Tools and for audio editing the waveform control is great.

An easy portastudio gives you all the functions and effect that come with more elaborate and expensive rigs, but at a fraction of the cost.

Of course the sound is all recorded digitally so there is absolutely no hiss as used to be common with the tape based systems.

I love my Mac, but if computers scare you witless a 16 track all in one home studio is defiantly an option.

Half of the home producers out there say you have to spend thousands on a Pro Tools HD system and even more on the best Neumann microphones money can buy. Very often this is more like equipment porn rather than actual need.

The other set of producers are penny wise and scour eBay for a $10 portastudio and a karaoke mic. This is equally as confusing to me.

Personally I think you should buy a PC, a copy of Pro Tools with a nice audio interface and one nice mic to start with. Whatever that cost you is the right price for a home studio.

That may sound strange but I’ve been testing it today with some quite nice results, and the super simple commands make it very hard to completely ruin you mix!

Firstly you select you track then go to “get info”. You will then be presented with a number of options and tweaks for your tracks like setting the right volume and adding a number of preset EQ styles.

This is not for the million dollar projects but as a quick and free mastering tool works quite well.

The first tip is to test you master through your nice studio speakers until it sounds perfect, then once your done make it your mission to test it through all manner of audio playback systems that you audience might use. Mono stereos, in car speakers and pc monitor are all notorious for changing your mix.

My second tip for today is to add just a tiny bit of reverb to your entire mix, this works especially well if you program a lot of your instruments; this reverb adds a more authentic feel to the recording.

Digital recorder with mixing capabilities – This can either be a good portastudio from a company like Tascam or a pc with some kind of recording software.

Sound source – either a guitar, vocal, piano or any one of the multitude of instruments you may decide to capture in you recording.

FX – once you have your song recorded you want to be able to manipulate the sound. Compression and reverb are the bare minimum.

These three simple requirements will get you started and used properly will give you great results. Remember that the early Elvis Presley and Beatles records where recorded witg only one track, so you can work wonders with what little you have.

Over the last couple of years the clever bods at Digidesign have been increasingly releasing products more focused at the project home studio market, in an effort to hook people in with light versions of their software. This is presumably an effort to showcase what they can offer so that people adopt the brand and start to spend more and more on higher end gear.

The Digi 002 is great if your looking to do a more traditional recording than you can achieve with the mbox, as it has many more inputs and outputs meaning you can try some live recording.

The first tip would be to literally force yourself to use all the keyboard shortcuts. I was in a session recently with quite a good producer but he was messing about with the mouse ever time he wanted to get something done. You can save many hours doing things the right way at the start.

The second quick Pro Tools tip would be to bounce all your midi tracks to audio when you happy with them. This will keep your session running smoothly if you low on ram.

But like anything this can be really overused leaving your songs sounding like some kind of crazy childs nursery rhyme.

The best songwriters like Johnny Cash or Elvis Costello seem to use rhyme in such a clever way slipping in cheeky little rhyming phrases in the most unexpected places. I think that is the real skill of a real wordsmith.

You would apply the compressor to the mixed down stereo file getting the tracks to a nice level, then the limiter to give volume a boost if needed and to really level the whole thing out.

I think that most people would say that pro tools is the more detailed piece of production software to base you home studio around, but logic has it’s place for the creative musician who does not want a really steep learning curve.

Logic as a product has many benefits for the musician / recording engineer in that it’s really been made with the musician in mind, from the menus to the virtual instruments; it all feels much nicer in logic.

The reason that Garageband works so well is all about speed. I have started to notice recently that a pro tools project never take less than four hours to complete with all the set up. But when working in Garageband you can be mixing and mastering in under an hour.

This rapid recording is all about the user friendly interface which is set up to help the musician rather than being a barrier to creativity.

Clearly pro tools still rules for the big budget projects, but for the tight deadline I would recommend using Garageband.

The first thing your going to need will be a midi interface which takes you midi notes and transfers them to your computer from your controller.

You controller is anything that can output a midi signal, like a keyboard or a drum machine.

Once you have all this working you can install a program like Reason on your PC or Mac and this will give you access to thousands of amazing sounds, that can really bring you home recording to the next level of sound.

Obviously this is quite a retro tape based system but they come in all shapes and sized these days, which means you can keep your recording ultra portable and still have that high quality digital sound with multiple tracks.

I first herd Regina on radio two while on tour In London and was instantly hook in by her beautiful piano based style and inventive lyrics, since then I have brought all her albums and have even done a few basic recordings emulating her style.

Of course if you did have a few hundred bucks’ Pro Tools is still the better option because you will have much more control than with the free software, but purely for mastering I think you could get something decent with Audacity.

For me the answer is always the same; if you want to write a great song, melody is all important.

If you think about Beatles songs the chords are not always that ground breaking, but what really sets them apart from the crowd of other wannabe legends is the inspirational and interesting harmonies they seem to produce with ease.

So if you write great lyrics and can’t seem to find and interesting melody work with someone who has the skill.

The first is a bit of a cheat but works like a dream. This method is all about looking at great songs and their chord structures and then basically reworking these melodies and ideas into you own creations. So find some great tunes on-line, mix em up a bit and your good to go.

Our second tip goes like this; take all the bits and pieces of songs you’ve been working on over the years and mash these into whole songs, it’s really easy to do this and once you give it a try you going to love it.

I have to say that my favourite bit was the mastering part because this topic can be such a black hole for newbies and intermediate producers alike.

That being said I would not dismiss this option out of hand because mastering music, especially at home can be a total minefield.

The problem is that you can completely ruin your great mix if you don’t know what your doing, and if you’ve got a record company to answer to this can be a problem.

If you know you’re up to the job do it yourself but if in any doubt at least spend the money and get a good pro to do the singles.

And so last but not least we come to the monitoring in your home studio which might very well be the most important aspect to consider as these are the speakers that you will listen to all your music through. Make sure you set aside a good amount of cash to invest in a great set of speakers and headphones as this is the only way to get a true representation of the music you are producing.

Key benefits include: clean open sound with good separation of instruments and performers, very detailed yet smooth response in the upper frequencies, controlled, tight bass if not a little muted (though may improve when I figure out how to reliably lodge them in my ear canal, more later), adequate sound isolation from both your environment and the headphone wire itself thanks to over the ear hard, but pliant to fit snuggly over your ear, plastic encased wire stress relief, low listening fatigue and good comfort with the correct sized ear plug (still don’t know if I’ve found mine yet). Garage Band Tutorial: About two years ago I finally made the jump from PC to Mac with a view to getting myself a piece of the Pro Tools / mBox action running on the beautiful machine.

But for a few short months I forgot all about my Pro Tools idea and fell in love with Garage Band, the free recording software that comes as standard with any Mac these days.

Garage Band is part of the iLife package and from simple beginnings has now become a very advanced bit of kit, mainly due to the fact that Apple brought out Logic Pro and copied many of the features.

I would suggest that with the latest version you could make a high quality album with no problem at all.

But this post is not about my Apple love, the only problem with Garage Band is that the guides and manuals that come with it are very inadequate, so below you will find a collection of detailed tutorials to help you jump right in and start making music.

If you’re still a Windows person I would seriously suggest hoping on the iMac train with a cheap sound card and start experimenting.

There’s a lot here so make sure you bookmark this page with a big “Garage Band Tutorial” sticker for future reference, nobody could watch all of these in one sitting!

The popularity of stereo grew rapidly because as well as providing a sense of the relative positioning of the instruments, the stereo recording technique lets listeners feel they are actually present in the same room as the performers.

Stereo recording is achieved by the use of two microphones and there are various different microphone positioning techniques, all of which have their own pros and cons. For the purposes of this article we’ll just concentrate on the more popular techniques, but there are in fact many different ways to record in stereo. It’s up to each individual to experiment with different techniques and then select the one that best suits their requirements.

Microphone Techniques - Coincident-Pair

This technique provides excellent stereo imaging with no noticeable phase problems. It is ideal in situations where there are noise problems and you need to ‘zoom in’ on sound.

The X/Y combination is the most common of the coincident-pair techniques and involves the positioning of two microphones of the same make and model towards the sound source and is ideal for close up recordings. Cardioid microphones placed at angles of between 90 and 120 degrees will provide you with a very focused recording and is often considered the perfect technique for those who are just starting off in the world of stereo recording.

Similar to the X/Y combination, the Blumlein Array uses two figure 8 microphones placed at 90 degree angles to each other. The centre angle faces the sound source allowing for an even balance.

The last of the coincident pair microphone techniques is called the Mid-Side. This recording method uses a cardioid and a figure 8 microphone positioned to form a T shaped polar pattern. The Mid-Side technique produces a left, right, and center image but requires double recording followed by the use of a decoder matrix or computer software to adjust the tracks.

Microphone Techniques - Spaced-Pair

This technique gives a better low-frequency response with enhanced stereo images but due to phasing problems it is more difficult to use.

To get around the phasing problems you should begin by mixing both tracks to mono and then experiment with the positioning of the microphones until the bass volume is as low as possible.

If you’re recording large instruments such as a piano, adopt the 3:1 rule. By positioning your microphones above the instrument’s hammers, three times the distance to the sound source from each other, you’ll achieve a perfect mix of bass notes to the left and treble notes to the right.

Microphone Techniques - ORTF

The ORTF technique (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française) is similar to the X/Y in that it uses two cardioid microphones. These are placed 17 centimetres apart and angled at 110 degrees. This technique does not lend itself to close up recordings and is better suited to situations like concerts where the microphones can be placed further back in a room.

Other similar techniques include:-

The Faulkner Array which uses 2 figure 8 microphones, placed 20 centimetres apart and facing parallel to the sound source.

The Stereo 180 technique which uses two hypercardioid microphones, 4.6 centimetres apart and angled at 135 degrees.

As mentioned earlier, there are several other microphone techniques in use. However to be a successful sound engineer you need to have knowledge of many different recording methods and the ability to adapt to each individual session regardless of the surroundings.

First, let’s have a quick word about hardware. Any computer made in the last couple of years should be suitable, but the iMac and MacBook series from Apple are considered by many to be the best. For successful recording on a PC you’ll need at least 1GB of RAM, a large hard drive and firewire and USB ports to connect your interfaces.

Pro Tools is the industry standard recording software and is used in virtually all the major professional studios.

The good news is you don’t have to break the bank to get good home recording software. Among the packages listed in PCMags ‘The Best Free Software 2009 - Hall of Fame’ is Audacity. PCMag rates it “on a par with any commercial audio editor, and the latest beta (1.3.6) version even supports MPEG-4, Dolby Digital, and Windows Media.”

Acoustica’s Mixcraft Recording Studio software costs just $39.95 and is a fast and easy way to record and mix your music. It comes with a wide range of features including built in effects like EQ and compression and you can export your mix to MP3.

Apple’s Logic is also an excellent choice. Although it’s a lot more expensive than Mixcraft, $499, it is a comprehensive package delivering everything that you need to produce powerful music.

Software Synthesizers

A software synthesizer is used to produce sounds that you can not obtain from ordinary musical instruments. Electronic Musician Magazine selected Omnisphere, from Spectrasonics, as the Editor’s Choice Software Synthesizer of the Year in 2008. It has a simple interface design and in addition to a library of thousands of sounds, the latest version features ‘Psychoacoustic’ sound sources for organic synthesis.

Home Recording Software for Audio Editing

Audio editing software helps you to create, record, convert, restore and edit your creations. Sony’s Sound Forge is an award winning digital audio editing software package that allows you to work with almost any type of digital audio including WAV, AIFF and MP3. The only way to eliminate the possibility of sound escaping is to completely enclose it. Even the tiniest hole renders the studio soundproofing ineffective. Although upholstery foam and mineral wool provide excellent acoustic treatment, they are not effective soundproofing materials.

What you need are thick walls, ceiling and floor for the best Studio Soundproofing

You can achieve this by completely plastering the room with an additional thick layer of cement but a much way is to build a ‘room within a room’. Adopting this approach forces the sound to travel through a double barrier and by utilizing the dead air space between the walls, dampens it considerably.

The most important thing to remember if you are going to adopt this approach is to ensure there is no contact between the outer and inner shell of the room. The inner room basically floats to create a gap of around 3 to 6 inches between the two structures.

Cut the Cost of Studio Soundproofing

If you’re working to a tight budget, building a room within a room might be too expensive, so let’s think about other options that can provide an acceptable level of studio soundproofing.

Consider the floor first. A lot of floors are already covered with underlay and carpeting. Then place squares of 18mm chipboard, two layers thick, on top of the carpet. It’s important NOT to screw the chipboard directly onto the floorboards. The chipboard joins need to be staggered to prevent the sound escaping through gaps. Any gaps between the chipboard squares and the chipboard and walls are then filled with mastic which effectively seals everything, eliminating gaps. On top of the chipboard add another layer of underlay and finally a carpet. The ‘several layers’ method provides additional insulation for the floor and if done efficiently, should stop sound escaping.

Moving on to the walls. We can again adopt the insulating type of technique by constructing a double plasterboard partition to add soundproofing to the existing wall. This new ‘wall’ must not touch the existing wall so it is wedged between layers of hair felt carpet. Fill the space between the two pieces of plasterboard with mineral wool and seal any small gaps with mastic. Once in place, the new wall should be covered with a layer of plaster.

The positioning of your studio will determine how much soundproofing is necessary for the ceiling. If it’s at the top of the house, with an attic above, you may be able to get away with a layer of chipboard over the joists in the loft. However, if your studio is downstairs soundproofing can be more of a problem. Insulating the floor of the room above is one possibility but what if that room does not belong to you?

Suspended plaster tiles are one option but are not really suitable for high frequency insulation. Another option is to use layers of plasterboard but remember to take the load bearing capacity of the joists into consideration. You don’t want to go to all that trouble just to have the entire ceiling collapse under the burden of the additional weight.

Traditional domestic doors are light and generally bad fitting with plenty of available gaps that let the sound escape. You can get around this by installing a solid fire door and ensuring it is well sealed all round.

Although implementing the above ideas will considerably diminish noise levels, they are not guaranteed to eliminate it completely. However, unless you intend to record live bands or head banging heavy metal music in the middle of the night they should be enough studio soundproofing to keep you and yours neighbours happy.

Think of your demo as a marketing tool, a way to get noticed and increase your audience. Don’t swamp the record companies with a lot of songs. They’re interested in hearing the best you have to offer, so only select your best 3 or 4 songs. Given that a demo can make or break a musical career, you’ll be relieved to learn that it doesn’t need to be prohibitively expensive.

Follow the steps below and you’ll have a professionally sounding demo at a fraction of the cost:

Home Recording Studios 1: Drums

Most people agree that the first instrument to record is the drums. These lay the foundation for the song. If you don’t have a drummer handy and can’t play yourself, consider using a drum software synthesizer such as Drumstation.

Home Recording Studios 2: Bass

The second stage involves the bass. The bass sets the rhythm and feel of the tune and should be played in-time on a good in-tune bass.

Home Recording Studios 3: Guitar / Piano

Now comes the turn of the rhythm guitar and/or piano. As with the base these should be in-tune and played in-time.

You should now have 3 tracks recorded and this is a good time to do a quick mix so that you can build on the foundation of the song when you add the vocals and lead instruments.

Home Recording Studios 4: Drums

The vocals are the most important part of your home demo. You need to position yourself in the right place in relation to the microphone with your mouth about 6” away from it while singing at your normal voice level. Move in a couple of inches when you come to a quiet part of the song, likewise move back a couple of inches if you’re singing loudly. Don’t worry about effects when recording your vocals, these will be added at the mixing stage. Once the main vocal has been recorded, add any harmony and backing vocals and do a quick work-mix to see how it all fits together.

Home Recording Studios 5: Leads

Now it’s time to record the lead instruments but be conservative. This is a demo recording; it doesn’t need blazing solos and always keep in mind that the instruments are there to support the song, not the other way around. As with all the other stages, a quick mix will highlight where you may want to do a particular rerecording.

Home Recording Studios 6: Mix It

Once everything has been recorded, you’ll need to mix the tracks. Make sure the vocals remain as the centerpiece of the composition.

When you feel that everything sounds perfect, burn onto disk. Now comes the big test. Play the disk on as many different types of machine as possible. Are you 100% satisfied? If not, go back and tweak the mix again until it sounds the way you want it to.

Although it may sound as if there’s a lot of work to do, it’ll be worth it if your demo is good enough to attract the attention of one of the big name record producers! Break out the Home Recording Studios and get going right now!

Pro Tools 8 has a modern user friendly, colourful interface and allows you to record in Loop Record, recording multiple takes each onto a new playlist.

One of the great things about Pro Tools is you can use it as a pre production tool. One of the most important phases of a recording project is pre production and yet this is one area that people neglect. Pre Production involves sitting down with the song writer and mapping out the way the songs will be structured and what instruments will be included in the recording. Rather than taking loads of handwritten notes, al of this information can be handled within the ProTools environment.

So how does it work?

First off you need to experiment with the tempo and key of the song. Open Pro Tools and go to View>Edit Window>Rulers>Tempo. Sit down with your acoustic guitar or keyboard and perform your song in its most basic form and then experiment until you lock down the perfect tempo.

Once you’ve identified the correct tempo and key, set up and lock a new click track, new track>click track, and record the instrument and vocal. You may also want to make use of the memory location tags to note where individual song parts are. These are useful for identifying the start of choruses, verses etc.

When you come to playback the click track, you’ll find lots of creative ideas rushing into your head. Make use of the memory location tags to note these down. Once you’ve built this backbone, it’s easy to open a new session and record the actual sounds.

Pro Tools studio software has the most options for working with digital audio post production, offers the best in digital mixing and supports all standard formats. It features a host of single-key edit commands that enable you to organize, listen to, and view your edits easily, making the post production stage simple and straight forward.

So, if it’s really that good why isn’t everybody using it?

First off, the professional edition is expensive and whilst the LE & M-Powered versions are cheaper they do not contain all the features contained within the pro edition.

Sorry No Pro Tool Studio On Vista For Now

Pro Tools studio doesn’t work on Windows Vista and even when the new version is released it will only work on Windows Vista Ultimate. It also works better on a Mac computer than a PC. Pro Tools has been designed to function with the company’s audio interfaces so if you don’t have one of Digidesign’s interfaces you should consider an alternative package.
If you already own a PC or Mac, and have an existing audio interface, programs like Cubase & Nuendo will work just as well and save you money in the long run. SONAR is another possibility; however it is not compatible with the Mac.

Before making any decisions, make sure you know exactly what you’re going to do with the software. Read reviews of the different packages on the Internet and try and get some advice from the professionals. A bit of research now could save you from a lot of hassle in the future.
