If you’re looking to start an easy home studio, go for a portastudio like the Tascam DP-02CF. This set up is really nice because you don’t have to mess about with lots of outboard gear and confusing computer that often crash.
An easy portastudio gives you all the functions and effect that come with more elaborate and expensive rigs, but at a fraction of the cost.
Of course the sound is all recorded digitally so there is absolutely no hiss as used to be common with the tape based systems.
I love my Mac, but if computers scare you witless a 16 track all in one home studio is defiantly an option.
