The Digidesign Digi 002 can be thought of as one step up from the mbox usb audio interface.
Over the last couple of years the clever bods at Digidesign have been increasingly releasing products more focused at the project home studio market, in an effort to hook people in with light versions of their software. This is presumably an effort to showcase what they can offer so that people adopt the brand and start to spend more and more on higher end gear.
The Digi 002 is great if your looking to do a more traditional recording than you can achieve with the mbox, as it has many more inputs and outputs meaning you can try some live recording.
A Digidesign Digi 002 can be found on ebay for around $800-$900
